HEAVY METAL AND ODOUR PROPERTIES

Foul odours and the presence of heavy metals characterises this wastewater and can biologically be treated with an Evaporation Algal Ponding System.

To biologically treat tannery effluent, the cultivation of Spirulina and Dunaliella in evaporative ponding systems addresses odours by the formation of “photosynthetic oxygen capping” on the water surface.  This effectively traps and neutralises odour compounds such as mercaptans.

Furthermore, the alkaline algal water is recirculated to induce the precipitation of heavy metals in a dedicated upstream facultative pond.
